Overview

China Star Chinese Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Portland at 2825 SE 122nd Ave, offers a rich tapestry of traditional and bold Chinese flavors that cater to a wide range of palates. This establishment stands out for its generous portions, making it an ideal choice for families, groups, or anyone with a hearty appetite. The setting is straightforward and clean, although the exterior might reveal some of the neighborhood’s rough edges, a reality that doesn’t overshadow the overall dining experience.

The menu is a compelling blend of classics and regional specialties, showcasing well-executed dishes such as Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and Hot & Sour Soup alongside more niche options like Twice Cooked Pork and Curry Beef. The selection of chow mein and fried rice varieties caters perfectly to those seeking familiar yet satisfying comfort food. Noteworthy is their approach to Sesame Chicken, which deviates from the traditional by serving the fried chicken separately from the sauce — a choice that intrigues more than it alienates. It’s a testament to China Star’s willingness to put a unique spin on beloved recipes.

Feedback from visitors consistently praises the quality and flavor of the food, highlighting standout items like Shrimp Lo Mein and Crab Puffs, which manage to balance authenticity with creativity. The restaurant’s sizable portions ensure you leave with plenty to enjoy later, amplifying its value. Service is reliably prompt and friendly, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere that encourages repeat visits.

China Star’s target audience is broad, appealing both to local residents craving traditional Chinese fare and travelers passing through Portland looking for a robust, no-frills meal. The combination of affordability, quality, and volume positions it as a practical spot for lunch or dinner, whether you are dining solo, with family, or colleagues. While the interior may benefit from some modernization, the focus remains firmly on delivering a satisfying culinary experience without pretension.

In summary, China Star Chinese Restaurant thrives on its authentic flavors, generous servings, and approachable ambiance. For anyone in the Portland area seeking substantial, well-prepared Chinese dishes with a touch of local character, it’s a promising destination worthy of exploration.

My co-worker and I got lunch here today, the fried rice and sweet & sour chicken was good but I opened up the shrimp, seen the way it looked and no way I was eating that. Gross! Online pricing is not updated as well, both meals were above costs that were posted online.

My family and I stopped in here yesterday on our way home for Mother's Day and were very impressed with everything that we ordered. We are from Eastern Washington and we unfortunately don't have many Chinese restaurants left that have decent food. However, China Star is definitely one that we will return to whenever we are on the road. The portions were the largest that I have ever seen. The prices were extremely reasonable, and the service was good. We had lots of leftovers which still tasted great the day after. 10/10

Food is AMAZING for the most part. However the sesame chicken is weird. It seems off. It doesn't seem traditional or like any other sesame I've had before. It comes without the sauce. It comes as fried chicken... you have to put the red sesame sauce in it that doesnt even have sesame in it. It tastes good tho. Just doesn't seem right to me. They also give you MASSIVE amounts of food which I will NEVER complain about. Its clean inside but coukd definitely use a face-lift. The used needles outside were a weird touch. But its 122nd.

Great food, been to alot of other Chinese restaurants & I will say this is best in a long time.. Super fast service... Shrimp lo mein is very good... Orange chicken & pineapple chicken was delicious... Crab puffs are not too sweet & can taste the crab in them... Sesame chicken was very good... Plenty of room at booths for larger people to fit in them...

Pretty delicious Salt and Pepper squid. If you like a bunch of peppers is for you. If not. I would suggest getting half the amount of pepper. Priced decent.

China star is so delicious! I decided to give another try since it’d been a while since I went and it wasn’t so good! But I truly don’t enjoy leaving bad reviews. Let me just say this dinner was AMAZING. Went and picked up two orders on Super Bowl sunday, I got a #8 (four sides) and a #10 for only $25!!! My bf had a full plate and I a smaller plate and we still had a bunch of left overs. 10/10 recommend!
